THE SENSORIAL MATERIALS IN THE Montessori classroom help children to distinguish, to categorize, and to
relate new information to what they already know. Dr. Montessori believed that this process is the beginning of
conscious knowledge. It is brought about by the intelligence working in a concentrated way on the impressions
given by the senses.
THROUGH THE SEQUENCE OF SENSORIAL materials, the child is exposed to
the various elements in the environment. The Sensorial materials expose the child to exercises in the
Discrimination of Size, Discrimination of Colour, Discrimination of Shape the Tactile Sense (sense of touch),
the Baric Sense (sense of weight) and the Sense of Taste, Smell and Hearing.
